Athletic therapists assess and treat individuals with musculoskeletal injuries, which may include injuries to muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones. Injuries resulting from recreational activities, training or due to repetitive work patterns would all benefit from a treatment program offered by an athletic therapist.

An athletic therapist will provide a thorough assessment and treatment plan for the injury using manual therapy, modalities, stretching, strengthening, pelvic stabilization, postural re-education and support taping techniques. This approach to injury management will enhance healing and help prevent further injury.

Athletic therapists are required to complete a minimum of four years in an accredited university and then three years in an approved Certified Athletic Therapy Association program. They also need to complete national certification exams before entering into practice.

Extended health care plans may provide full or partial coverage. When inquiring with your insurance company, you must specifically ask if your plan covers treatment from a Certified Athletic Therapist.

Chiropractic is a regulated health profession recognized by statute in all Canadian provinces. Doctors of Chiropractic assess disorders related to the spine, nervous system and joints of the extremities. They provide a diagnosis, treatment and prevention of those disorders.

The treatment intervention specific to Chiropractic is the Chiropractic Adjustment or Manipulation. This procedure is a drug-free, non-invasive, very controlled manual procedure, which utilizes highly refined skills developed during four intensive years of chiropractic training. The primary goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to treat areas of decreased motion in the joints of the body, particularly the spine. This decreased motion can create a reaction in surrounding tissues (ligaments, muscles, nerves) resulting in pain, dysfunction and muscular spasm. The chiropractic adjustment helps restore motion to the joint, thereby alleviating symptoms.

Most extended health care plans now offer coverage for chiropractic services. Please check with your insurance company if you have coverage.

Massage Therapy is a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy provides an alternative health option to help alleviate the soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain syndromes. It can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning, if employed early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury.

The purpose of a Registered Massage Therapist is to help create a change in an individual’s physiology so that the body has a chance to heal itself properly. In the past it has been generally thought that massage was only effective for stress release. This fact is true, but it can also be used in helping the body deal with a whole host of ailments from muscle strains to bronchitis and even conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.

Extended health care plans may provide full or partial coverage. When inquiring with your insurance company, you must specifically ask if your plan covers treatment from a Registered Massage Therapist.
